Wood creations and fine art photography by Big Island artists Tess Rumley and Kirk Shorte will be exhibited Saturday at Rumley Art and Frame Gallery in Kailua-Kona.
The public can meet the artists during a reception from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the gallery, which is located inside the Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Light pupu will be served.
Using exotic woods of the Big Island, such as koa, keawe, mango, milo and monkey pod, Rumley creates her unique pieces of wood art, sculptures and furniture. Rumley is a local artist, who in addition to being an author, creates visual arts, photographs and organic and unique pieces of functional wood art. It’s her intention that in sharing her creative works to the public they too will be inspired to tap into and unleash their own creative potential.
Tess and her husband own Rumley Art and Frame, an art gallery, custom framing and archival giclee printing business in Kailua-Kona.
Shorte is a self-taught photographer who grew up in the seaside community of Belmar, N.J. After a long career in the high tech industry in Silicon Valley, Calif., Shorte moved to Kona in 2004, where he revived his love of photography and continued to hone his skills.
Shorte’s photography is distinguished by his use of highly saturated colors, crystal clarity and the high dynamic range (HDR) bracketing technique. He uses HDR not as a way to create surrealistic images, but as a tool to bring out more detail in his images. Together, these techniques create the visually-stimulating images that make his photos so appealing.
Shorte runs Shortini Photography, a growing operation in Kona but has worked as the marketing director for Jack’s Diving Locker, and a freelance photographer for West Hawaii Today. His photos also grace the covers of three books.
